"Streetz - N - Burbz" To most outsiders looking in, "Streetz - N - Burbz"
sounds like just another catchy album title. But for the 24-year-old,
D.C. born, Maryland raised artist named Dee Woodz it symbolizes
so much more. Ask him what he thinks about his album title
and he'll tell you it's his life's portrait. He just wants
you to get the picture.
"I pick that name because of my past. I went from living
in Northeast D.C., having my brother killed, seeing things
others will never see to living in 3 level townhouses and
plush condos" recalls Dee. "I'm glad I experienced
both sides, that's what made me who I am, good or bad, I wouldn't
change a thing. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger."
With that attitude and the knowledge he has gained from what
he calls "shady business dealings", he is poised
to take the game by storm. Known more for his catchy punchlines
and slick subliminals, he still understands the need for a
complete song with catchy hooks and subject matter. "I'll
listen to damn near any song Jay-Z and 50 Cent put out, not
because everything they do is great, but because they make
great songs. I just hope people think everything I do is tight
and complete" he laughs. " What people don't understand
is that I've been offered a deal before. Not just one either.
But if I wasn't smart I would've taken em' then what, sit
on the shelf for years just for the sake of having a deal?
Nah, I'm smarter than that."
It's not hard to see that he truly loves and studies that
game. Yet, when face to face with Dee you can still see the
lingering pain masked behind his wide grin. In 2005, he had
a minor brush with the law that almost ended his music career
before it officially started. What could have cost him years
of his life ended in a plea deal of community service and
a 1 1/2-year of probation.
"I always think about the Commissioner who set my bail.
He said "you know those good jobs you want to get?"
Dee recalls. He told me "with my charges I would have
to find something else I'm good at. I'm glad he told me that,
because now I make more money. He'd be pissed to see me now"
he laughs. Streetz - N - Burbz, I hope the picture is clearer
for you now.
